12:22:38 From Gia Suggs : There is no “breakthrough” without a “break-with”. That will always case discomfort!

12:25:47 From Saly Ortiz Vicente : wow…
12:25:51 From Wylie Blanchard to Lotus Buckner(Privately) : call on me after this to follow up.
12:26:00 From Lotus Buckner to Wylie Blanchard(Privately) : will do
12:26:22 From Lotus Buckner to Wylie Blanchard(Privately) : I was going to end the poll and have you react to the responses as well.
12:26:32 From Wylie Blanchard to Lotus Buckner(Privately) : great
12:26:32 From Elizabeth Santana : If you ever get a chance to hear Luvvie Ajayi speak on “Not My Circus, Not My Clown”, do. I saw her ATD TK 2020 and she was fabulous. She also has a book (I’m Judging You: The Do-Better Manual) and a popular blog.
12:26:39 From Gia Suggs : It is a reframe from a Tony Robbins quote. I find it to be true.
12:26:40 From Laura Ladd : Yes words are powerful and that is disheartening…
12:27:25 From Paula Spears : So true!
12:28:10 From Gia Suggs : I love that Jackie was okay to respectfully create some discomfort to address issues that requires change!
12:28:34 From jackie price osafo : https://www.linkedin.com/in/jacqualine-price-osafo-mba-cae-890b689/
12:28:44 From Lotus Buckner : Yes, Gia! It is very difficult to grow in your comfort zone.
12:29:01 From Gia Suggs : Exactly!
12:30:02 From jackie price osafo : gia, yes it’s tough, the alternative is to remain marginalized
12:31:13 From Gia Suggs : Which, we can see based on current events, is no longer an option.
12:31:31 From David Bernstein : In my experience – when the D&I goes to HR, it runs the risk of being viewed as expense that can be cut or eliminated
12:32:54 From David Bernstein : Needs to be a function that reports into the Exec Team directly to have the greatest impact – but can only happen when the top team views this as mission critical and then they role model the corresponding behaviors
12:32:54 From Lotus Buckner : David, that is definitely a possibility in many organizations! D&I cannot be seen as just a compliance initiative. It needs to be what we live and breathe in our culture.
12:33:54 From David Bernstein : Agree @Wylie …and you increase the influence of your voice when you use data and analytics
12:34:31 From Elizabeth Santana : Are you sharing the results? Not seeing them.
12:34:51 From Elizabeth Santana : Thank you.
12:34:55 From Rachel Munyaradzi : Wylie – thank you for your transparency! As black people we have to tone ourselves down to fit in. We never bring our whole selves to work
12:35:02 From Karla Bylund : @David Bernstein – I agree
12:35:06 From Lotus Buckner : Elizabeth, can you see them now? They shold hopefully be shared.
12:36:14 From Saly Ortiz Vicente : If you’re using two monitors, it might have pop up on the second one. Happened to me 🙂
12:36:51 From Gia Suggs : Great examples Wylie!
12:36:55 From Elizabeth Santana : And a force for change
12:36:56 From Karla Bylund : Good story Wylie, but isn’t it sad that we have to work so hard to be seen?
12:37:15 From Paula Spears : Agreed, it is sad and exhausting.
12:37:42 From Wylie Blanchard : @Karla, It is sad but it is not uncommon.
12:37:56 From Saly Ortiz Vicente : scary stats!
12:38:00 From Karla Bylund : How many are Native American? We keep getting left off statistics. :/
12:38:08 From Stephanie Bertels : It’s strange to see this discussion from a legal perspective. It feels like for several decades, legal has been trying to hammer it into their company’s/organization’s heads. I have to wonder how many legal departments are actively working with HR to change cultures?
12:38:28 From Elizabeth Santana : Thanks, Sally. I was able to see them.
12:38:35 From Judy Safian : sobering stats
12:40:42 From Lotus Buckner : @Karla, you are so right! These organizations don’t report on Native Americans! It is even less when dig into that data.
12:41:00 From Wylie Blanchard : One of my favorite topics
12:42:16 From Gia Suggs : YES!
12:42:21 From Elizabeth Santana : Intentionality. In the NFP world, we often rely on volunteers for a lot of the work and the old teachings were to try to make the volunteer bodies representative of the membership body. One of the things my company is doing is shifting this mindset – we’re trying to provide greater representation for groups under-represented in our professions, hoping that we’ll have an impact beyond just organization.
12:43:07 From Anthony Papini : +1 to sponsorship!!
12:43:21 From Ana Ulicevic : Karly that is spot on! Agree!
12:44:00 From Lotus Buckner : Sponsorship is when people talk about you and promote you even when you’re not in the room!
12:44:40 From Karla Bylund : I think one way we move the needle is (like Wylie did) recognize the exclusion and stand up for the marginalized groups. I have often been the only female on an executive board and had to fight to be heard. I was even asked to take notes once when I was the only female, yet was the second highest ranked person in the room. So when I witness someone being discounted due to their identity I am a bear. I will stop a meeting and point out that every voice should be heard.
12:45:13 From Karly Segal : @Karla – the notes! I have noticed this for sure. I’m lucky to work with leaders who have basically learned/realized to never ask me to take notes
12:46:21 From Lotus Buckner : @Karla, yes! It is so sad how common that story is with taking notes!
12:47:35 From Wylie Blanchard : That is amazin
12:47:54 From Sarah Moore : That’s great!
12:48:01 From Lotus Buckner : Yes, @Jackie!! That is sponsorship!
12:48:18 From Laura Ladd : A leader who truly cares and wants the best for her team members.
12:48:38 From Karla Bylund : I love this idea of sponsorship!
12:48:52 From Jamon Harrell : I love that, fill your Kitchen cabinets!
12:49:32 From jackie price osafo : Great resource – Erasing Institutional Bias: How to Create Systemic Change
12:49:54 From Gia Suggs : YES! Thank you!
12:50:44 From Dorothy Heilbrunn : Fantastic – thanks for sharing information with us. I am certainly intrigued by the difference of Sponsorship and how it is different from Mentorship.
12:51:49 From Sarah Moore : Great point Wylie!
12:52:22 From Jamon Harrell : Accountability is key to ensure action is taken.
12:52:43 From Page-Horvet : Results that can be measured!
12:52:53 From Lotus Buckner : I love that! Great personal tactic – dedicate a certain percentage of your income to your own development.
12:53:06 From Gia Suggs : Thank you Wylie!!!
12:53:09 From Karly Segal : that’s amazing!
12:53:11 From Elizabeth Santana : Thanks for sharing the book title, Jackie. And
12:53:27 From Elizabeth Santana : Please book Gia’s title in chat too.
12:53:42 From Lotus Buckner : We will send out links to all these great resources!
12:54:16 From Elizabeth Santana : Great! I have coworkers who wanted to attend but could not. That will be helpful.
12:55:16 From Kiran Qamar : great question Lotus!
12:56:22 From Stephanie Bertels : This is a GREAT recommendation, Wylie. Thank you!
12:56:48 From Paula Spears : Great session! Thank you Lotus and the panel.
12:56:51 From Judy Safian : Shattering the Glass Ceiling; How to Break Through Without Breaking Down by Gia Suggs and Hayward Suggs
12:58:34 From Elizabeth Santana : I think hiring a firm to help assess where we are and how we can improve can be a good first step, but it’s meaningless without do-ables and follow-through, and the creation of concrete plans and timelines.
12:58:57 From Anthony Papini : +1 to Elizabeth’s comments about follow-up and action
12:59:22 From Elizabeth Santana : Thanks, Judy.
12:59:31 From Laura Ladd : Thank you everyone!!
12:59:44 From Karly Segal : https://www.linkedin.com/in/karly-segal-8ba7621/ – would love to connect with people!

13:00:28 From Kiran Qamar : Thank you so much Lotus and all the speakers!
13:00:31 From Elizabeth Santana : Thank you!
